HARARE – Zimbabwe’s prominent former political prisoners Job Sikhala and Jacob Ngarivhume have announced they will team up to lead protests against corruption, resource plunder and economic problems under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.

The activists stressed at a press conference in Harare that they are ready to unite with all democratic forces to address the challenges facing Zimbabwe and condemn selfish leaders who put personal interests above the well-being of the country.

“This alliance represents the people’s desire for democrats to unite to solve our country’s problems. We welcome this significant development following extensive consultations with citizens,” said Sikara.

The alliance aims to gain support from change agents to tackle the country’s problems. Sikala clarified that the alliance is only open to individuals or groups not associated with Zanu PF.

“Progressive forces are those who do not support the ZANU-PF regime and believe in democratic rule, collective decision-making and prioritizing the interests of the people,” Sikara explained.

Activists stressed their commitment to reflecting the will of the people, including leading protests when necessary. “We will be the messengers of the people’s will,” Sikara affirmed.

Ngarivhume echoed this, stressing the collective responsibility to liberate the country from the Mnangagwa regime. He stressed that if protests occur, they are ready to lead the charge in accordance with the right to protest as enshrined in the Zimbabwean Constitution.

“The regime’s intolerance of protests shows its flaws. If the people call for protests, we are ready to lead them in a peaceful manner,” Ngarivhume declared. “We will respond to the people’s call as provided for in the constitution.”
