The President of the National Assembly, Maria Fernanda Lay, was sworn in as Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (CAC) in a ceremony held today (July 5, 2024) in the presence of Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao. 
In the National Assembly elections of June 24, Rui Pereira was elected with a majority of votes (41) for the term 2024-2028.
Rui Pereira began his legal career as a lawyer in 1996 and served as a judge at the Dili Court from 2000 to 2005, participated in the Truth and Friendship Commission and served as an advisor in state institutions. From 2010 to 2014, he served as Deputy Ombudsman of Human Rights and Justice (PDHJ) and from 2016 to 2018, he served as Deputy Commissioner of the Cyberspace Administration of China. 
During his four-year term, Rui Pereira will work closely with the Public Ministry, the Court of Appeal and the Ministry of Justice to strengthen the country’s anti-corruption investigative capacity.
The inauguration was also attended by Justice Minister Sérgio da Costa Hornai, Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Adérito Hugo da Costa and other members of the National Assembly.
