NEW YORK – Ronald Gómez Mesa, a Dominican who witnessed a minor skirmish that sparked a fight in the Bronx in broad daylight, was stabbed to death in a confusing incident that left a two-year-old baby orphaned.
The 29-year-old victim moved to the United States in 2010 to be with his family, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help his family with funeral expenses.
Gomez Mesa was a “dedicated father to his two-year-old daughter, who will deeply miss his guidance and love.”
The crime occurred Tuesday afternoon outside Rainbow Day Care, where Gómez Mesa was chased by an assailant, allegedly the boyfriend of a woman whose car was scratched shortly after 4:30 p.m. in the Morris Heights neighborhood.
According to witnesses, Gomez-Mesa had nothing to do with the accident and was simply outside Randy’s Deli and Grocery on West Tremont Avenue at the corner of Ferran Plaza when it occurred. “There was a car accident and this lady’s car was scratched,” said a man who wished to remain anonymous. “The woman got out of the car with a bat and called her boyfriend,” she claimed.
The suspects soon arrived, and as bystanders watched the fight, another man on a motorcycle threw a bottle at the couple and then drove away. The boyfriend inexplicably rushed towards another unrelated person who was also sitting on a motorcycle watching and pushed him to the sidewalk.
“The boyfriend attacked a young man who was just hanging out,” the witness said. At some point, another man in the crowd outside the warehouse, identified by the witness as Gomez Mesa, confronted the boyfriend. The victim ran away but was chased and stabbed near Ferran Square outside the Rainbow Daycare Center, according to witnesses.
Paramedics rushed Gomez-Mesa to St. Barnabas Hospital but were unable to save his life. Police said the man lived less than a half-mile from the same neighborhood where he was killed.
There are no immediate details about the traffic accident that sparked the violence. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.
