Cargo ship crew filmed huge waves and shared them on social media

Mexico City (APRO) – Sailors on cargo ships in the North Sea (Atlantic Marginal Sea) have shared videos that have gone viral due to the dangerous conditions in which they work.

The videos show different types of giant cargo ships making their way through rough seas, with waves crashing against the ships and crews trying to avoid them, while others show images of stormy weather or dark nights on oil platforms.

The North Sea is known to churn in part because many sides of the ocean are surrounded by land, so waves don’t have as much room to travel and form huge peaks, Lucy Bricheno, a coastal oceanographer at the UK’s National Oceanography Centre, explained to National Geographic.

Although various information about the North Sea has been shared on social networks, due to images of strong waves and storms, Sofia Keres, an expert on wave conditions at the Dutch Deltares Institute, clarified to the New York Times that waves in the North Sea can reach up to 20 meters.

The images circulating on social networks may be scary, but the North Sea is not the most stormy body of water in the world. The Southern Ocean, for example, has recorded waves up to 23.5 meters, but has much less maritime traffic, so its waters are less likely to be circulated on platforms such as TikTok or X.

Despite what is being said on social networks, these waters are not the deepest. The depth of the North Sea is generally 37 to 91 meters, but in some places it can reach 300 meters.

The North Sea sees a lot of maritime traffic as some of the world’s largest and most important ports are located on its coast. Germany, Belgium, France, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom share this stretch of water, which is vital to Western European trade.
