Education scandals in Madagascar continue unabated. After the revelation of the leak of subjects in the Premier Periodic Curriculum (BEPC), which already led to the arrest of a teacher and a student, specifically involving the Ministry of National Education, we have another similar incident on behalf of the Ministry of Technical Education and Vocational Training in the Vocational Certificate (BEP) examination.
A teacher who was responsible for supervising students taking the BEP exams allegedly offered one of them a sum of money in exchange for complete freedom during the exam and to do “whatever she wanted”. This scene allegedly took place yesterday in the capital, Antananarivo. According to consistent sources, the official was arrested for attempted corruption.
A source at the Ministry of Technical Education said that any attempt at corruption will not be tolerated. That is why the ministry filed a complaint against the teacher for his shameful actions. His arrest will show the authorities’ intransigence in truly improving the level of education in Madagascar.
However, these dual situations confirm that there is a real impasse both in the field of national education and in technical education and vocational training. The case of the University of Malagasy, and in particular the University of Antananarivo, no longer needs to be presented in these “criminal” cases. But all the facts documented in recent days only reflect the very difficult socio-economic situation of the Malagasy people. Due to the poverty of the system, most Malagasy people are looking for an easier way of life. However, nothing can justify corruption or crime.
