Sudan conflict exacerbates humanitarian crisis in Sennar state

4 July 2024 (Khartoum) – The United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Agency (OCHA) has warned that the ongoing conflict in Sudan is exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Sennar State.

The announcement came after a UN team visited several reception centres in Gedaref where displaced families were seeking shelter following the clashes in Sennar.

“The team reports that large numbers of people continue to arrive,” Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, told reporters. “Children and elderly people are among those arriving, and they are in very difficult conditions and cannot carry much with them. The office is working with other UN agencies and our partners to provide critical humanitarian assistance.”

In addition, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed concern about the drone attack on a mosque in Fashar where food relief was being distributed, killing eight children.

“The mosque, which has been providing food to vulnerable children and their families, is clearly not a safe place,” Dujarric said. “The senseless killing of children in Sudan and elsewhere must stop.”

Meanwhile, OCHA further expressed deep concern that a key supply route could be cut off, making humanitarian aid in eastern Port Sudan inaccessible.

“We reiterate that famine is imminent and that life-saving assistance must continue to be delivered across conflict lines and borders,” Dujarric stressed.

More than eight million people have been displaced since conflict broke out in Sudan between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April last year.
