Russia has warned that it “will not hesitate” to attack Gibraltar if Ukraine uses British weapons on its territory.
The threat was made last Thursday by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
She told reporters that if British weapons were found to be used on Russian territory, the British enclave would find itself at risk “both inside and outside Ukraine”.
Zakharova specifically pointed out that these enclaves include military bases in war zones, as well as military facilities in Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands and Africa.
Earlier, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said the Ukrainian military had the right to attack targets within its territory using weapons provided by London.
The comments angered Putin, and the Russian government cited it as one of the reasons for holding drills this month simulating the launch of tactical nuclear missiles.
Putin and his cronies now see London as increasingly drawn into the conflict.
But any attack by the dictator on British targets would likely trigger a direct military response from Britain and its NATO allies, including Spain.
This would draw much of Europe and the United States into a complex regional conflict.
Britain described Gibraltar as one of its five most important strategic outposts in a military report last year.
The article said Hong Kong could “serve as a springboard” for Britain to demonstrate its strength to the world, and called it “vital” in combating “current and future threats.”
