GAROWE (HOL) – Authorities in the Gamudug and Puntland states have successfully brought together two rival clan militias to implement a comprehensive ceasefire, ending intense fighting in Mudug state.
Galmudug Security Minister Mohamed Adan Gabobe announced on Friday that troops from the Galmudug presidency had been sent to the conflict zone. He also said troops from the Puntland presidency would join Galmudug forces to enforce the law and prevent further conflict.
Minister Gabobe expressed optimism that the conflict between the two tribes could be resolved after they each elected 13 traditional elders to form a peace committee to discuss how to end the conflict in the western part of the Mudug region.
“After our discussion, at the end of the meeting, mayors from both governments should be responsible for their respective areas and the army will be deployed to arrest those who cause harm,” the security minister said.
Last week, inter-communal clashes in rural areas between Goldo Gob and Saakurun in the Mudug region left nearly 30 people dead and more than 50 injured. The clashes involved militias from the Saad and Lelakase clans over a land dispute.
