On Friday, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico made his first public appearance since becoming the victim of an assassination attempt in May.
Fico, who has been recovering after being shot four times at close range in mid-May, spoke at tonight’s celebrations of the Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Slovakia’s national holiday.
Fico was shot as he greeted supporters after a cabinet meeting in the central Slovak town of Handlova, after which he underwent several hours of surgery and has been recovering at home since late May.
His attacker, 71-year-old Juraj C., was detained and charged with premeditated attempted murder. Prosecutors this week declared the case a terrorist attack.
The attack on Fico highlighted the deep polarization of politics in this Central European country of 5.4 million people.
In a video posted on Facebook in early June, Fico described the attacker as an opposition activist, but also said he felt no hatred towards him and would not seek compensation.
According to court documents, the detained man said he wanted to hurt the prime minister but not kill him. He explained that he did so because he disagreed with his policies, especially the decision to abolish the special prosecutor’s office and suspend military aid to Ukraine.
