Hurricane Beryl, the first Atlantic storm to reach Category 5 strength, continues to wreak havoc across several Caribbean countries along its path
CARIBPR WIRE, NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C., FRIDAY, JULY 5, 2024: Water Missionis a Christian engineering nonprofit organization that is responding to the ongoing devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl, which has affected several countries in the Caribbean, including Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and is moving toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The Water Mission Disaster Assistance Response Team has been deployed to Grenada to bring safe water treatment equipment to meet the daily safe water needs of thousands of people. Union Island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines was particularly hard hit, with the country’s prime minister recently saying that 90% of buildings, including homes, have been destroyed. Water Mission is actively coordinating water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) efforts with local government departments.

Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 5 storm ever to form in the Atlantic Ocean, has killed and displaced thousands of people in several countries. It is expected to hit Mexico today as a weakened but still destructive storm, bringing strong winds and potential flash flooding. The Water Mission has a field office in Mexico and has developed water and sanitation programs. Staff and resources in the region have been mobilized to help assess and respond to emerging needs for safe water.
