Search and rescue operations are underway to find the 11 fishermen who have been missing since Tuesday.
The operation is currently being carried out by the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Maritime Aviation and Cyber Command (MACC).
According to JDF, the fishermen left the Cow Bay area of St. Andrew in three canoes on Saturday, June 29, 2024, heading for Morant Cays and were expected to return on Tuesday.
As boats and fishermen failed to arrive and rescue efforts were in vain, they contacted the Japanese Defense Forces yesterday to start a search and rescue operation.
The JDF said in a press release that all its search and rescue assets are now fully operational following the passage of Cyclone Beryl. The Army has deployed a helicopter from the JDF Aviation Wing and a maritime patrol vessel from the JDF Coast Guard to search for the missing fishermen.
JDF urged all seafarers to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the red, white and blue fishing boat named “Blessing”, the green and burgundy fishing boat named “Prayer Warrior” and the vessel named “Prayer Warrior 2”.
The Army is asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of these vessels to contact the Marine Aviation and Operations Center at 876-926-8121 ext. 4004-6 or 876-836 1216.
The Jamaica Defence Force said they remain committed to the safety of the Jamaican people and will continue to work tirelessly to bring the missing fishermen home.
