After a 12-day suspension, flights to Lifou resumed on Friday, July 5, 2024. This came as a relief to passengers. The runway at Vanaheim Airport was damaged on June 22, resulting in the suspension of all air routes between the island and Noumea.

Passengers returned to Vanaheim Airport this Friday. The cross-traffic between Noumea and Lifou involved 350 aircraft and was carried out three times in the morning.

Many of these first travelers worked in the capital. “I had a two-week holiday at Liv, so I was happy to see my colleagues at work, see the state of the house, see the family”“The passenger said. “We left to do our daily jobs but were stuck there, He added. We are happy to be back in Noumea because we have children and grandchildren.”

Aircalin is working to ensure its flights resume normally in the short, medium and long term. “We have added extra flights this weekend, especially for the run-off elections.”Marion Gentelet, Commercial Director of Caledonian Air, elaborated. We are planning to fly two or even three flights a day at Lifou next week, instead of just one flight per day as we did before the runway was unavailable.”

Freight services are not available at this time. “It’s very detrimental to us and our customers, but we have set up some specific organisations for companies that need to send parcels.”

Next week there are 14 flights planned to Lifou, 7 flights per week to Mare, 3 flights per week to Uvea and 2 flights to Isle of Pines.

Please note that the Magenta Airport car park remains closed to the public. Travellers can reach it on foot. The site remains under military surveillance for security reasons.
