When he formally accepted the King’s invitation to become Prime Minister, he was greeted at Downing Street by a crowd of cheering aides and supporters.
Starmer pledged to “work to restore trust in politics and serve all voters”.
He added: “It’s clear to everyone that our country needs a greater reset and rediscovery of our identity because one of this country’s greatest strengths is our ability to always sail to calm waters, no matter how dire the situation. Storms have been present throughout history.”
He continued his speech: “You have given us a clear mandate and we will use it to achieve change.”
