“Now I want to say a few words to our Russian-speaking citizens, because diversity is the cornerstone of development and prosperity, if not in the European Union, and therefore I want to congratulate all citizens, including those of Moldova. Our Russian-speaking citizens, Ukrainians, Gagauz, Bulgarians, all citizens of the Republic of Moldova, on this important day – the beginning of negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the European Union,” the representative said.
Popshoy noted that in the EU, unlike elsewhere, all citizens, regardless of religion, language or ethnicity, feel that they are equal citizens of their country and of the EU as a whole.
“This is what Moldova is trying to achieve, and next year will be especially difficult for our Russian-speaking citizens, as they will have to deal with so much propaganda ahead of the European integration referendum, which our country, unfortunately or fortunately, did not see.
But we have to come together as a nation, regardless of language, regardless of other views,” Popshay stressed.
People’s deputies noted that European integration is an opportunity to create a better future for all citizens.
“We will continue to support citizens who speak Russian and other languages, including supporting them in learning Romanian. We know that many Russian speakers want to learn Romanian in order to integrate more effectively into social, economic and political processes. Our state will continue to support these intentions,” Popshoy concluded.
