Fiji recorded an impressive 3-1 win in their OFC U-19 Men’s Championship opener in Apia, Samoa today.

The first goal of the game was scored by Tahiti captain Kamalani Bennett who easily beat goalkeeper Ilisoni Koro in the 20th minute.

The Marika Rodu-coached side was awarded a penalty after captain Pernisoni Tirao was tripped in the box.

Tirau took the penalty kick and the ball went past the goalkeeper but hit the post.

New Zealand player Akash Prasad equalized the score before halftime, and Tirau’s long-range shot hit the inside of the post and bounced into the net, giving Fiji the lead. The 2022 World Cup finalists led 2-1 at halftime.

Fiji’s second half started the same way the first half ended.

Tirau kicked the ball high into the goal and scored again.

Fiji moved to the top of Group A and will next face the Solomon Islands.

As for Tahiti, they will look to bounce back in their second game against Vanuatu on Monday.
