The state of the railways in Slovakia is far from what it should be. Therefore, Railways of the Slovak Republic (ŽSR) is preparing to modernize several sections. In some cases, they are requesting a shortened procedure for issuing a strategic investment certificate.

ŽSR Request for Strategic Investment Certificate
ŽSR has submitted a request to the Ministry of Transport of the Slovak Republic for a strategic investment certificate for several investment projects. Specifically, these tracks are:
Nová Ves – State Border SR/CR
It involves the modernization of the railway line section No. 1. 110 (Line – Bratislava – Kuti – SR/CR state border – Lanžhot CR) is located in the Devínska Nová Ves – Kuti SR/CR state border section. Preparations are being made for passenger and freight railways transportation.
The modernization concept also allows for an increase in track speeds to 200 km/h due to local restrictions. Exceptions are sections where this speed is not possible or where increasing the speed would require high investment costs.

Devínska Nová Ves – Slovakia/Czech Republic border, Malacky part (outer side) – Kuti
The modernization of the railway line consists in improving the technical parameters of the line by adding technical equipment. The modernization plan also takes into account the increase of track speed to 200 km/h (except ŽST Kúta). All level crossings on this section will be removed.
The total length of the modernized railway line is about 26 kilometers. The project will also include the construction of a railway rolling stock diagnostic network system, which will make maintenance and operations more efficient. Implementation is scheduled for 2026-2029.
Kadcha – Krasno-Kusukhu River
The modernization project is mainly for a section of 11.7 kilometers, which needs to improve the existing technical parameters of the section, including all railway infrastructure. The goal is to restore obsolete and worn structural parts and technical equipment to standard conditions.

The maximum speed should also be increased to 120 km/h compared to the current level. Modernization should also improve safety at railway crossings. Implementation is planned for the period 2027-2030.
Žilina – Košice, Liptovský Mikuláš – Poprad – Tatra Mountains (outer section)
The modernized section is located between the Paludza turnout (Liptovský Mikuláš) and Liptovský Hrádek. The modernization includes:
- Reconstruction of existing railway lines, including track extensions,
- Eliminating level crossings and replacing them with non-level solutions (overpasses, underpasses),
- Construction of railway bridges, noise insulation walls and other building technology elements.
The proposal to modernize the track section also takes into account the increase of track speeds up to 160 km/h, with parameters up to 200 km/h. The total length of the proposed modernized section of the line is 18.5 km. Investments are planned for 2025-2028.
Double track of Devínska Nová Ves line – SK/AT border (Malčeg)
The subject of the proposal is the completion of a second track from the state border between Slovakia and Austria to ŽST Devínska Nová Ves with a total length of 4.49 km. In addition, ŽST Devínska Nová Ves will also be rebuilt to modern standards of railway station equipment in accordance with the needs of future operations. Implementation is scheduled to begin in 2030.
