along with Generative AIit can be hard to tell which of these AI assistants for coding and creative work is right for your business. Two of the main AI assistants are Google Gemini (formerly Bard) and Anthropic’s Claude.ai.
This article compares the core features of these two AI assistants, both of which will be free starting July 2024. To use Gemini, you must log in with a Google account. To use Claude, you must log in with a Google account or email address. In either case, if you use a Google Workspace account, you should check with your administrator to ensure access is allowed.
What is Google Gemini?
Gemini Gemini is an experimental conversational AI system designed by Google. As a large language model, Gemini can generate responses in text, code, and other content based on input prompts or images. Google launches Gemini (Bard) will begin deliveries in the first quarter of 2023. February 2024Google later renamed Bard to Gemini to indicate that users could access a range of AI models under the same brand name, not just a single chatbot.
What is Claude.ai?
Claude.ai is a public beta version of Anthropic’s conversational AI system. Claude 2 mid-2023. Since then, Claude.ai has updated to the latest version of the Anthropic model, Claude 3.5 SonnetAnthropic highlights the effort it put into designing Claude, focusing on Artificial Intelligence Safety.

The context window determines the length of content that the system can retain and respond to in one go. In short, if the limit is exceeded, the system may give a response that indicates a lack of “retention” or “understanding” of the content outside the window. Longer windows make it possible to analyze long documents.
Gemini and Claude Pricing
Both Gemini and Claude.ai are free to use. Anthropic offers paid Pro and Team plans on Claude.ai with multiple seats and higher rate limits. Pro costs $20 per user per month, while Team costs $25 per user per month. Google offers Gemini Advanced, which lets Gemini interact directly with Gmail and Docs and adds 2 TB of storage. You can access Gemini Advanced with a Google One AI Premium subscription, which costs $19.99.
The most notable competitors of these two systems are ChatGPT Developed by OpenAI, it offers a free version and a more powerful version that costs $20 per month to upgrade.

Conversation Chat
Both Gemini and Claude operate in the same way as traditional AI chatbots: you enter a prompt and the system responds. As conversational chat systems, they allow you to reference previous prompts in the chat. For example, if your first prompt is to summarize a book:

In the chat conversation, in order to understand the author, the following questions may be asked later:
Who wrote it?
The system should understand that “it” refers to the book and “who” refers to the author. Compared to traditional search, summarizing the main points is simply not feasible, and you need to combine everything into a keyword search query to understand the author.
One notable difference between the two systems is that Claude supports much longer context windows than Gemini. As a result, Claude can handle longer texts and allow for longer conversations on a topic than Gemini.
Writing text
Gemini and Claude work well when you want a system to generate text. For example, you can ask either system to write the text you need for almost any purpose, such as an email, marketing copy, cover letter, or blog post. Specify the content, length, and type of text you want in as much detail as possible, and both systems tend to generate usable text. Not happy with the results? Describe exactly how you need to modify the tone, content, length, or structure of the text, and have Gemini or Claude try again.
Generate suggestions
Gemini and Claude excel at asking for recommendations. Ask the chatbot for a list of things you’d like to learn about, explore, or read, and you’ll likely receive at least some relevant content. If you have examples, include them to provide context and push the system to respond more relevantly.

Claude.ai: Pros and Cons
Claude’s unique advantage is its ability to handle long text files, thanks to the system’s fairly long context window. You can upload up to five files, each up to 10MB, along with your message.
For example, you can upload one or more sample technical plans, guidance, or strategy documents. Once shared, you can explore the details in these documents with Claude. Alternatively, you can provide Claude with relevant details about other organizations or customers and ask the system to write a new plan based on the sample plans you uploaded earlier.
Claude’s Advantages
- Excellent long document capabilities (thanks to Claude Pro’s long context window of 200k+ tokens or about 500 pages of text).
- As part of the prompt, up to 5 files can be uploaded, each with a maximum size of 10MB.
- Wide support for coding/programming languages.
Claude’s Disadvantages
- No access to internet search.
Google Gemini: Pros and Cons
Gemini’s ability to access the internet and accept image inputs sets the system apart from Claude. Gemini can use search to incorporate the latest news, weather, and other information into responses, whereas some large language models can’t pull information past a set date. In many cases, this enables Gemini to provide the latest data in responses, along with example prompts for events that happened in the last month. And because Gemini incorporates many of the image features previously available in Google Lens, you can upload a JPEG, PNG, or WebP file and then discuss the image’s contents. (Gemini’s image features will initially be available only when used in English.)
Advantages of Gemini

- Built-in export to Gmail, Google Docs, and public sharing.
Disadvantages of Gemini
- Lack of support for file uploads.
- Compared to Claude.ai, the context window is limited.
Should you use Gemini or Claude?
Gemini and Claude represent state-of-the-art conversational AI systems with capabilities growing rapidly. Both are excellent choices if you want to try out generative AI tools.
However, Gemini is clearly best when your chat requires internet access or image support, while Claude is clearly the better choice when your chat might benefit from uploaded documents or long conversations.
Experiment with both AI systems to familiarize yourself with their capabilities, then choose the chatbot that best helps you accomplish your specific tasks.
