Soon after arriving at the school, she faced offensive comments from her classmates, who nicknamed her “Bunda Becky,” a slang term for her butt.
But instead of rejecting the boys, she exchanged flirtatious messages with two of the teens on Snapchat before going on a walk together and eventually meeting at her apartment. She also had sex with two underage boysand eventually became pregnant with one of their children.
Joyce admitted she broke her teacher’s safeguarding rules by approaching the teenagers and having them return to her flat, telling the jury she had ruined her job by making a stupid mistake.
During the trial, she attempted to claim that no sexual activity had ever taken place between her and Boy A, and insisted that she had only started a relationship with Boy B during her suspension. She claimed that after she was fired, Boy B left school at 16, and that sexual activity had taken place between them, so no crime had been committed.
But the jury disagreed. Manchester Crown CourtJoyce was convicted of six counts of sexual activity with a child, two of which occurred while acting as a person of trust.
During the trial, prosecutor Joe Allman pointed out similarities between the two victims’ cases. He said both boys were 15 when she began bringing them into her apartment and were communicating with her on Snapchat — messages that had been deleted and could not be recovered by police.
In both cases, their parents were tight-lipped about their behaviour, and they both flirted with her, with boy A calling her “sexy” and boy B texting her: “Show me your bum.” Mr Allman asked: “What did you say?” Joyce replied: “Smiley face.”
She took the initiative to contact Boy A and gave him all but one digit of her mobile phone number. As a problem-solving exercise, Boy A had to work out the last digit.
The flirtatious text messages continued, and two weeks later the child lied to his mother and said he was going to a friend’s house to play computer games after school on Friday.
Instead, Joynes picked him up near his home in her Audi A1, took him to the Trafford Centre and bought him a £350 Gucci belt. On the way, when Boy A mentioned “I’m not old enough” to drive, Joynes laughed and said: “Oh, shut up!”
After taking him to her apartment, they had sex twice, with Joyne warning: “It’s better not to let anyone know.” The next day, his mother found a love bite mark on her son’s neck, and after Boy A took a photo on Snapchat, rumours began to circulate around the school.
The police received a tip-off and Joyce was suspended. The investigation is still ongoing and the police also seized the semen of Boy A found on the bed sheets in the teacher’s apartment.
Joyce returned home to live with her parents in Wirral after her “breakdown”. Boy B messaged her on Snapchat to ask how she was doing. “I really thought he cared about her,” Joyce told jurors.
Similarly, the young man lied to his parents, saying he was going to a Manchester United football match one night. But in fact, Joynes picked him up in her car and took him back to her apartment. He said he had sex with Joynes about 30 times before she was arrested, in a relationship he initially considered to be just “friends with benefits.”
Boy B said Joyce had told him she couldn’t get pregnant so they had unprotected sex but she later found out she was pregnant.
Jurors heard that their relationship deteriorated, with frequent arguments over whether to have an abortion and Joyce becoming jealous and controlling.
In an attempt to save the relationship – just one day before Joyce’s second arrest – she invited Boy B over for a “date night” which involved an Ann Summers scratch card with drawings of sexual activities, rose petals and hidden notes around her apartment, triggering “surprises” while Boy B obediently played along.
Finally, there was a baby onesie with “Best Dad” written on the front. “I was like, ‘What the f**k is going on!'” Boy B told police during an interview.
In a letter to boy B, she also wrote: “Every inch of you is perfect. You are all my dreams.”
Joyce cried as she told jurors her baby, Boy B, was taken away from her just hours after she gave birth and she is now limited to seeing jurors three times a week. She is accused of trying to win sympathy from the jury by carrying a pink hat tucked into her trousers.
She said she felt lonely after the coronavirus outbreak, let her guard down and “succumbed” to the attention she was receiving, making the mistake of meeting young people outside school, but she denied any wrongdoing.
Jane Wilson, senior prosecutor at the North West Crown Prosecution Service, said: “Rebecca Joyce was a sex offender. Joyce had a huge responsibility to educate and protect children. She abused her position of power to entice and ultimately sexually exploit male students. Her actions had a lasting impact on them.”
