Harare, Zimbabwe – Lawyer Thabani Mpofu, an ally of former opposition leader Nelson Mnangagwa, has issued a stern ultimatum to Zimbabwe National Army Commander Lieutenant General Anselem Sanyatwe to retract controversial statements within seven days.
Sanyatwe recently announced that the military will resort to “command voting” in future elections and claimed that the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front will remain in power indefinitely. These remarks, made in a video clip of Sanyatwe addressing ZANU-PF supporters, have sparked widespread concern over their unconstitutional and illegal nature.
Mpofu, who serves as legal adviser to Nelson Chamisa, stressed that Sanyatwe’s comments blatantly violated several key aspects of Zimbabwe’s legal framework. He pointed out that the comments violated Sections 208(2) and 55 of the Constitution, which uphold the principles of impartiality and non-interference of the military in political affairs.
Furthermore, the remarks violated the provisions of the Electoral Act and the National Defense Act, further undermining the rule of law and constitutionalism in the country.
In his formal request, Mpofu stated:
“Sir, I am therefore writing to request that you unreservedly withdraw the above statement within seven days of receipt of this letter, failing which I will take steps to ensure appropriate remedies under the law.”
Mpofu’s move highlights the seriousness of the situation and the legal consequences Sanyatwe could face if he fails to comply with the demands.
