Looking back at the time when I wrote my first book, Alibaba (09988) was on the eve of its IPO, and I wanted to share Alibaba’s experience in big data. In fact, the public’s understanding of big data was still half-understood at that time, but surprisingly, the book “The Decisive Battle of Big Data” was recognized by many industry friends. When I was writing “The Decisive Battle of Big Data”, it was the busiest day at work, and I could only spare 5 o’clock in the morning to write it. It was not easy. I thought that I would never write a book again after it was published.
Who knows that since 2013, I have unknowingly written three Chinese books, namely “The Battle of Big Data”, “The Essence of Data”, and “Number Cycle”, as well as an English book and translated three books. I believe that this motivation should come from the original intention of promoting big data. Whenever I hear encouragement from friends, I feel that sharing my experience is a responsibility to the industry.

After returning to Hong Kong from Hangzhou in 2016, I have been paying attention to the development of big data in Hong Kong, and have participated in many SAR committees and consultancy and training for some companies. Hong Kong companies generally lack investment in digitalization and rarely have a clear digital strategic layout. Therefore, whenever they see new policies in China, many companies can only sigh and do not know how to respond. Although the Hong Kong SAR government has been catching up in recent years, companies are still weak in their awareness of digitalization, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, which have encountered many challenges in digital transformation. They lack funds to invest in new technologies and lack the ability to recruit and train digital skills talents.
So two years ago, I started to plan to write a book on digital literacy with several experts, hoping to contribute to the younger generation and small and medium-sized enterprises. After several attempts, we finally decided to use artificial BroadCast Unitedligence (A: Artificial Intelligence), blockchain (B: Block Chain), computing power (C: Computing), big data (D: Data), and science and technology ethics (E: Ethnics) as themes in a brief history, using easy-to-understand text to explain. In addition, in order to make this book more interesting, we specially selected key figures and interesting stories as the subject matter in each theme, while avoiding too many technical terms to scare readers.

The key to successful digital transformation includes three core elements: first, a clear strategic vision to ensure that the top-level design is consistent with the company’s goals; second, a strong technical infrastructure to support effective data integration and application; and finally, a positive organizational culture that encourages innovation and improves employee capabilities through continuous skills training. What these three have in common is that good digital literacy is a prerequisite.
