BAMAKO, July 3 (Xinhua) — Residents and local officials of a village in the Bandiagara region of central Mali confirmed on the 3rd that more than 20 people had been killed in the village on Monday.
“Dozens of terrorists from Katiba Masina attacked Djiguibombo village around 5pm on Monday, July 1. Initial estimates put the death of 22 civilians, including dozo hunters (traditional hunters), while many others are missing,” said an official in Doucoumbo, Bandiagara district.
According to witnesses and local officials, the attackers surrounded the village where a wedding was taking place.
Another local official said: “The attack took place during a wedding celebration and the groom was also killed. The village was looted and burned. The damage was very heavy.”
One survivor said the attackers killed men, looted goods from shops and grain from homes, and took away women before defense and security forces arrived.
Since 2012, Mali has been caught in a political, economic and humanitarian crisis, with frequent terrorist attacks.
