A civil society activist said he and other colleagues were briefly detained by National Security Service (NSS) agents deployed at the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) on Wednesday afternoon.
Centre for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) Executive Director Ter Manyang Gatwech told Radio Tamazui that the incident occurred after parliament passed the controversial NSA amendment bill, when security personnel asked him who invited him to the parliamentary session.
“We were detained by the NSA for 40 minutes after the meeting today, and they asked us who asked us to come and this is why. We told them that it was a public hearing and everyone could attend. They said that according to the order, civil society organizations, journalists and activists were not allowed to enter the meeting,” he narrated.
“We told them this was not the first time we had come to such a meeting, this was a discussion between us and the national security personnel within parliament as they took us to their office within parliament. We strongly condemn this as the CPA.”
Manyang criticised the way the controversial bill was passed, saying the NSA’s powers to make warrantless arrests were retained in the amended bill.
“Also, the passing of the bill is not right as they have included everything including Section 54 and 55 in it and also shifted those powers to Section 57 which will disturb the entire public,” he said seriously.
