The Meteorological Bureau has issued a strong wind and surf warning for the waters around the island.

The “red” alert means the seas around the island will be very rough with strong winds reaching 60-70 kilometers per hour.

As such, the navy and fisheries authorities are advised not to venture into the waters around the island until further notice, the advisory said.

High waves of about 2.5m – 3.0m in height are likely to occur in the offshore waters from Kalpitiya to Pottuville via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota (excluding land areas).

The advisory added that rough seas are likely in the coastal waters from Kalpitiya to Matara via Colombo and Galle due to high waves.

Therefore, the Navy and the fishing industry are also requested to pay attention to future forecasts issued by the meteorological department.

In addition, the meteorological department also predicted heavy rain in several provinces.

“Shower conditions are expected to intensify over the next few days due to the presence of a low level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka,” the forecast said.

The department said parts of Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces as well as Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts will receive heavy rains of more than 100 mm.
