Hashnet:
The Iran-affiliated Houthi terrorists announced in mid-month that all levels of education in public and private schools would start a new school year, which is considered the first precedent in Iran’s history of education, as the summer semester is usually used for vacation.
The decision was met with complaints from the public and calls for teachers to strike for wages, while the educational and popular circles confirmed that the organization seeks to serve its sectarian and political goals and objectives through the new school calendar, Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported.
According to the militia academic calendar, studies will end in mid-February next year and final exams of the academic year will begin, at which time the regiment will have completed preparations for launching a recruitment and enlistment center.
Anas Manea, a geomorphology researcher, was quoted by the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper as saying that the Houthis insisted on starting the school year during the extremely hot and harsh summer, saying it was part of their efforts to push students and families to avoid education and be satisfied with what they receive in summer centers.
Manea confirmed that the Houthis’ goal is to replace education with summer centers in order to attract students and recruit them into their ranks. “By changing the school calendar and opening summer centers right after the end of the academic year. Since these centers are held during the spring semester, the weather is hot and calm throughout Yemen, which will facilitate participation in these centers,” he said, explaining that the academic year is based on a calendar set by the Houthis. The climate mostly occurs between extremely harsh summer and winter, instead of the spring season when the weather is pleasant and suitable for all kinds of human activities.
The Houthis use the Hijri calendar in various activities, managing the various institutions under their control and using it as an excuse to deal with the refusal to open the summer semester. This provides an opportunity to complete the project before the end of the winter semester so that the summer centers can start at the beginning of the spring semester, for which the group provides huge capacities and budgets in exchange for a clear neglect of the formal educational process.
Abdel-Wasi Fatki, an expert on education issues, believes that the Houthis are using such measures and decisions to achieve political goals, including violations of the school calendar established by the legitimate government, such as trying to prove their independence as an independent authority and their violations and non-recognition of the government, as well as their lack of interest in the safety and lives of students.
“Summer in Yemen coincides with the most active agricultural season due to seasonal rains, which prompts rural families to seek help from their sons and daughters in farming, herding and household chores, in addition to daily wage job opportunities during this season, which are not considered by the Houthis, who are only concerned with achieving their sectarian projects,” Al-Jarida quoted Al-Fataki as saying.
Fataki noted that in recent years, many students have fallen victim to flooding incidents, as the educational process has coincided with the rainy season, as well as high temperatures, especially in the plains and coastal areas. This has made the educational process very difficult and has greatly limited the possibility of receiving an education, something that the Houthis do not care about, he believes.
