Chadian President Mohamed Idriss Deby Itno is under preliminary investigation in France for suspected illegal gains. This information was confirmed on Tuesday, July 2, by a source familiar with the matter, following an investigation into the Chadian president’s lavish clothing spending.

At the end of 2023, French media Mediapart revealed that more than 900,000 euros would be spent on the purchase of suits, shirts and other luxury clothing. These expenses were allegedly paid through a mysterious company called MHK Full Business, which is registered in N’Djamena and has an account with Chari Commerciale du Chari (BCC).

The National Financial Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation in January 2024 for embezzlement and concealment of public funds. The suspicious transactions will involve transfers made by Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, especially in December 2021 and May 2023. The purchases included luxury goods from a famous Parisian tailor, with a total amount of more than 915,000 euros.

The investigation, initially focused on the clothing charges, could expand to real estate assets held by the Déby family in France, which are being scrutinized by French authorities to check whether they are also the result of misappropriated funds.

In his recent autobiography, Mohamed Idriss Deby Itno described the incident as a political manipulation orchestrated by former presidential adviser Abakar Manani. Deby condemned what he called “ridiculous media hype” and said he preferred traditional clothes to luxury suits and he would never like the latter.

The president of Chad has remained firm in the face of the allegations, categorically denying the corruption charges. The incident could have political and diplomatic repercussions, and both Chad and France are watching closely as the investigation continues to make progress.
