Other violent demonstrations took place in major Kenyan cities on Tuesday, including the capital, Nairobi.
Police used tear gas and charged stone-throwing protesters in central Nairobi as they sought to quell Kenya’s worst violence since protests last week left at least a dozen people dead.
Demonstrations across the country show that President William Ruto has failed to appease a protesting youth movement, even as he backed off plans for a tax hike that sparked last week’s unrest.
Tuesday’s protests started out enthusiastically but turned violent. Their attack took place in the commercial village in central Nairobi. Police wearing helmets, carrying wood dust and shields stood in front of the violent youths.
Shops were burned, emergency workers were busy treating the injured, and police were arresting people on the street, according to witnesses and reporters.
Other protests took place in Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city, where people held up palm tree branches and chanted “Ruto go!”
Kenyan state television said two people were shot dead in Mombasa and showed footage of a car on fire.
Kenyan media reported that demonstrations also broke out in Kisumu, Nakuru, Kajiado, Migori, Mlolongo and Longo.
President Ruto is facing the worst crisis of his two-year rule as his government intervenes over money owed to the International Monetary Fund and complaints about rising living standards.
The Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHCR) said 39 Kenyans have been killed in protests and clashes with police since June 18. Most were shot while trying to force their way into the parliament building in Nairobi.
