Goundar Shipping Lines head George Goundar expressed serious concerns about drug problems among crew and passengers, urging the government to implement mandatory drug testing and stricter regulations to ensure safe travel.
“The drug problem on board is serious and we have reported it to the government,” Mr. Gondar said.
“They have to do something about the crew. They have to have mandatory drug testing for the crew.”
He highlighted the risks posed by drugs and alcohol to seafarers and passengers.
The company has taken steps to address these issues, including firing crew members found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“We just fired several people last week for drug and alcohol abuse, which is very dangerous for seafarers and passengers. We need to clean up the shipping industry.”
Mr Goodal also called for greater transparency and cooperation with police to combat drug trafficking among passengers.
“We have been asking the police for this. They need to be more transparent on the ship. Or we can facilitate the police on the ship. Drugs move very fast these days.
“Some of our crew are now involved in drugs. Selling drugs in the outer islands. This has to stop.”
