Experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a technology that uses neural interfaces to create bionic prosthetic limbs.

According to MIT biophysicist Hugh Herr, amputees often don’t begin to associate a prosthetic limb with parts of their body. This is because a person doesn’t feel it like a healthy limb. Experts have created a bionic prosthetic that supports a neural interface.
The operation proposed by scientists is carried out in two stages. Immediately after amputation, the prosthesis is connected to the ankle and calf muscles. In the second stage, the patient is fitted with an implant that transmits data from the brain to the prosthesis. This allows you to truly control the prosthesis with the power of thought, without having to think about regular movements – such as climbing stairs.
Experts tested denture wearers and people who received implants. It turned out that patients with gaps walked 41% faster and were able to climb inclined surfaces and steps. They also admitted that they felt the prosthesis was part of their body.
MIT engineers and doctors say the surgery could be performed at the time of amputation or years later, but it would not work equally well for every patient. Also, over time, a person’s upper thigh muscles may atrophy.
Hamid Charkhkar, a biomedical engineer at Case Western Reserve University, calls her colleague’s approach very organic. “Our limbs are inextricably connected to our bodies through bones, muscles, and nerves,” Charkhkar noted, emphasizing that a person can and should think of a prosthetic limb as part of the body.
