On February 27 this year, a 46-year-old man was arrested and detained by the Punakha police on suspicion of raping his 15-year-old stepdaughter. Yesterday, he was sentenced to nine years in prison by the Punakha Court.
The court found the defendant guilty under the provisions of the Bhutan’s Criminal Code (Amendment) 2011, which is a second-degree felony with a minimum sentence of nine years and a maximum of 15 years in prison.
Under the Criminal Code, any person who has sexual intercourse with a child between the ages of 12 and 18 is deemed to have raped a child over the age of 12.
At the same time, criminals are required to pay child support after they are released from prison.
The case arose from a complaint filed by the suspect’s wife. The incident took place on February 26 when the suspect had an altercation with his 41-year-old wife from Trashiyangtse. After the altercation, the Paro police were informed of the matter.
As the crime took place in Punakha, the case was handed over to Punakha police on February 27, leading to the detention of the convict. Prior to his arrest, the convict was living in Paro town with his wife and step-daughter.
The prisoner is from Sewla village of the Chubu ethnic group in Punakha.
The criminal was a former police officer and had a child with the victim who is currently under two years old.
Sources told Kuensel that the criminal started molesting the victim a few years ago when she was living with her mother and stepfather in Punakha. They moved to Paro from Punakha. The suspect listed the victim in the census as a daughter. But their child was not registered in the census.
The convict had two children with the victim’s mother, who also lived with the convict’s sister. The victim’s mother lived in Paro and was a weaver at a handicraft shop in Paro.
