With four consecutive wins, following their 1-0 victory over Brazil in the previous match, the Peruvian softball team (Perú Rojo) has taken an important step towards winning the 16th South American Women’s Senior Championship in Lima in 2024. The competition will be held at the Andrés Avelino Cáceres Sports Complex in Villa María del Triunfo until July 6.
With the outstanding performance of Maria Pizarro, who is described by head coach Julio Rodriguez as “the best pitcher in the United States”, Peru’s Rojo team took advantage of the Brazilians’ mistakes in the game and won a hard-fought victory in a very tense game. The only run of the game was scored in the sixth inning.
“We have a great pitcher, one of the best in the United States, and we must support the performance of María Pizarro. This is a very young team that will go a long way in the short term. We have more matches to go, complex ones, but we will know how to solve them throughout the team to bring great joy to Peru, which has not won a gold medal in 40 years and has not been on the podium in 24 years”, said Julio Rodriguez, head coach of the Peruvian national team.
The Peruvian Red Team thus continues its march towards the championship, having previously defeated Guatemala, Chile, Peru Blanco and most recently Brazil. Their next match will be against Argentina on Wednesday the 3rd.
Peruvian team members: Jimena Kunigami, Kiana Kadena, Alessandra Teruya, Itati Susano, Tamie La Puente, Carla Lobatón, Wendoly Santa Cruz, Thais Uyema, Adriana Yamakawa, María Pizarro. Head coach: Julio Cesar Rodríguez.
At the end of the third day, Peruvian Rojo led the preliminary round table with four wins. Second place was Colombia, third was Brazil, fourth was Argentina, fifth was Guatemala, sixth was Peruvian Blanco, and seventh was Chile.
