District Government Peshawar The government on Thursday banned rickshaws from the Pir Zakori bridge to Surey Pul section of GT Highway in an effort to ease traffic congestion.
The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Peshawar Divisional Commissioner Riaz Khan Mehsud, an official statement confirmed.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner Afaq Wazir, Senior Superintendent of Police Saud Khan, officials from the Regional Transport Authority and Excise Department and representatives of transport unions.
It has also decided to seize and scrap old buses and vans plying along the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor while detaining their drivers.
The participants also agreed to seize auto-rickshaws registered in other districts but operating in the district. provincial capital.
They also directed the authorities concerned to take strict action against rickshaw drivers who make photocopies of their licenses and registration documents, while ordering sealing of rickshaw factories.
The meeting decided to ban the supply of rickshaws in Punjab and ordered the arrest of suppliers and confiscation of these three-wheelers. The meeting also added that the district administration will launch a 20-day crackdown on illegal rickshaws, buses and trucks from Thursday.
The plan prohibits the use of high-voltage horns, flashlights, tinted glass, illegal license plates and musical instruments on vehicles and will destroy them, while legal action will be taken against drivers under the age of 21.
The authorities have also decided to seize and scrap buses, trucks and rickshaws operating illegally in the provincial capital. The authorities have formulated a strategy to clamp down on illegal transport vehicles in the provincial capital and have given transport union representatives confidence in this.
Officials went on to say that the crackdown will continue till May 29. Meanwhile, officials have deployed special teams comprising police, district administration, transport and excise departments to ensure the success of the crackdown.
