Jersey City breaks ground on 622-unit “The Cottage” project

The construction boom at Journal Square has somehow added another building site to the landscape, with construction officially underway on a tower next to the emerging pedestrian plaza.

On June 28, developer Nasser Freres, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and other dignitaries attended a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of construction on The Cottage. market and the eponymous restaurant on Monticello Avenue, this version will be 28 stories tall and just steps from the Journal Square PATH station.

Jersey Reported The project was approved in late 2021 and will invest more than $300 million in the community. Designed by Handel Architects, The Cottage features an L-shaped design consisting of a three-story base, which is intended to visually connect with the community’s existing three-story rowhouses.

The first floor of The Cottage will face Homestead Plaza and adding 3,823 square feet of large floor-to-ceiling windowed retail space. The car-free plaza, which has already completed several sections, hopes to become a destination similar to the Grove Street pedestrian plaza in downtown.

The Cottage will have 44,551 square feet of office space on the second and third floors, with the remaining floors to be residential units. Amenities at the future building will include indoor and outdoor rooftop lounges and a swimming pool overlooking Journal Square and Jersey City.

The exterior walls of the rectangular low-rise section will be clad in blue, grey, white and black metal panels, while the jagged upper floors will feature glass curtain wall elements. There will be no dedicated parking for cars at the development, but there will be space for 350 bicycles.

An estimated completion date for the project has not yet been announced, but the project will be a major step in the evolution of the Journal Square community.
