Sri Lanka High Commissioner to Singapore Senarath Dissanayake recently met with a team of officials from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) at the High Commission.
An ICA delegation is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from May 26 to 31, 2024. The visit aims to explore opportunities for collaboration to strengthen Sri Lanka’s immigration system by integrating advanced technologies and achieving standards similar to those of Singapore.
The visit was arranged at the request of Sri Lanka’s Public Safety Minister Thirang Alais and Singapore’s Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam.
During the meeting, the High Commissioner highlighted the challenges Sri Lanka faces in terms of border control. He stressed that the Minister and the Sri Lanka Immigration Department were keen to host the delegation as their expertise and insights would greatly contribute to Sri Lanka’s efforts to modernize and improve its immigration procedures.
ICA Deputy Director General Phua Chiew, who led the ICA team to Sri Lanka, briefed the High Commissioner on ICA’s transformation journey and their planned collaboration with the Sri Lankan authorities. He explained that the upcoming visit was a preliminary step to understand Sri Lanka’s border control system and related measures. He also expressed ICA’s willingness to assist the Sri Lankan Immigration Department in improving its border management capabilities.
The meeting ended with a joint commitment to strengthen cooperation between the two countries on border control and immigration matters. Prior to this, High Commissioner Senarat Dissanayake and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority Director-General Marvin Sim held a briefing to discuss potential cooperation between the two countries’ immigration authorities.
The meeting was also attended by Foreign Affairs Minister and Secretary General Ahamed Razee and Minister Counsellor Naduni Hasintha.
