Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) is building two car ferries for use in Bass Strait between Tasmania and Australia, but the project has been plagued by problems and delays.
The Finnish government is understood to have provided around 50 million euros to help the troubled Rauma shipyard RMC stay afloat. Report Broadcast by Australia’s national broadcaster ABC.
ABC reported that Australian shipping company TT-line paid A$81 million (about €50 million) to RMC in March because the Finnish company “faced increasing financial problems, partly due to increased material costs caused by the war in Ukraine.”
The Finnish government subsequently pledged an equal amount of funding and also promised to guarantee the future financial viability of RMC.
RMC is currently building two Spirit of Tasmania ferries for use across the notoriously dangerous Bass Strait between Tasmania and mainland Australia. However, the ferries are already behind schedule and are being further hampered by rising material costs due to the war in Ukraine.
The first ship is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and the second ship is expected to be completed in spring 2025, but further delays are expected, ABC News reported.
The Tasmanian Government is keen to deliver the order on time as delays will result in significant additional costs.
