Register for events for the upcoming Donegal Heritage Week

This year’s National Heritage Week will take place from Saturday 17th August to Sunday 25th August and will once again see a number of events taking place across Donegal.

The Heritage Council encourages citizens, community groups, families, organisations, newcomers, enthusiasts and professionals to participate in National Heritage Week by organising an event or project.

This year’s theme is “Connections, Routes and Networks”, with event organisers encouraging exploration of the various ways we are connected to one another through our architectural, archaeological, cultural and natural heritage.

Online registration is now open and all events or projects can be registered on the National Heritage Week website. www.heritageweek.ie Organisers are encouraged to register their events by Monday 15 July to be included in the County Donegal Heritage Week Events Guide, but events can be registered online before Heritage Week begins.

Joseph Gallagher, County Donegal Heritage Officer, said: “Last year County Donegal Heritage Week was a huge success with 95 events and three digital projects taking place across the county.

“All the people, community groups and heritage organisations across the county deserve praise for the hard work they put in every year to protect, preserve and steward our county’s rich heritage. National Heritage Week provides them with an opportunity to showcase their local cultural heritage and promote their work. This year we expect over 100 events to take place across County Donegal. Activities will include architectural heritage open days, guided walks, site visits, field trips, exhibitions, illustrated talks, workshops, traditional skills demonstrations, nature displays, garden tours, artisan markets, historical re-enactments, launch events, film screenings, storytelling, traditional music and children’s activities.

“The County Donegal Heritage Office is supporting Heritage Week event organisers by providing advice, free branded Heritage Week merchandise and printing a County Donegal Heritage Week event guide in local newspapers. Donegal County Heritage Office will also be hosting a lunch event and photo session for Heritage Week event organisers at the County Museum, High Road, Letterkenny on Thursday 1st.^{English Stone} All Heritage Week event organisers are invited to attend at 1pm on August 28.”

National Heritage Week is coordinated by the Heritage Council and local authority heritage officers, and supporting materials are available when you register for an event or project online.

The Heritage Week website features training and information webinars with practical tips on organising and promoting events and projects. The County Donegal Heritage Office will be helping people, community groups and heritage organisations in County Donegal by providing free National Heritage Week branded merchandise and promoting their events.

New this year is the Heritage Open Day, scheduled for Saturday 17 August, when municipal and historic properties are invited to open their doors to the public. If you own a historic house or manage a historic property and would like to attend a Heritage Open Day, you can get more details and support from the County Donegal Heritage Office.

Two days during Heritage Week have a special theme: Saturday 24 August is Wild Child Day, encouraging children and families to make the most of the outdoors, enjoy and explore the local heritage and biodiversity. Sunday 25 August is Water Heritage Day, celebrating Ireland’s water, our connection to it and how our history and heritage has been influenced by our seas, rivers, lakes and wetlands.
