Former Australia Wallabies captain Michael Hooper has brought his storied Australian career to an end after failing to make the Paris Olympic men’s rugby sevens squad.
Hooper revealed on social media that he would quit the Australian rugby team after he was not selected for the 12-man Olympic squad, which was finalised by coach John Manetti at a training camp in Darwin last weekend.
A year plagued by injuries ultimately cost the 32-year-old a chance to earn selection through actual effort.
“What an extraordinary journey! My Olympic journey is over and my Australian rugby career is over,” Hooper wrote.
“To the Australian Sevens team, I wish you all the best. You are a fantastic, supportive and talented group of athletes.”
“As for my time with Australian Rugby, I am grateful for the continued unwavering support of my family and friends. Together we have had an incredible journey filled with unforgettable experiences, challenges and memories. Thank you.”
The Australian Olympic Committee will announce the Australian rugby sevens squad on Wednesday, but Hooper made the announcement to ensure his absence would not distract from his teammates in the Olympic squad, according to people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to comment because the selection process is confidential.
Sources say Hooper also turned down the option of travelling to Paris as one of two emergency replacements, instead pushing for a longer-serving member of the squad to take the spot.
