The High Court is hearing 24 election petition cases.

The cases are related to the 2024 joint parliamentary elections.

High Court deputy registrar Jack Taloifuila confirmed this to SIBC News earlier this week.

He said two other cases would be scheduled for directions hearings next week.

“As of Monday, 24 cases have been mentioned, with two of them listed for hearing next week.”

“A direction is basically just a hearing where after the petition is filed, the court will list the petition case for a directions hearing to assess the case. The court will then lay down a timeline on what the lawyer needs to do to dispose of the case quickly because the petition case needs to be disposed of within 12 months of filing,” said Taloifuila.

A total of 28 election petitions have been filed with the High Court since the election petition filing process came to an end last month.

Twenty-six of them were against victorious MPs and two against members of the provincial legislature.

Deputy Registrar Taloifuila also confirmed that two election petition cases filed against members of the provincial assembly had been withdrawn and deferred for hearing.

“The complaint against the MLA has been withdrawn as the complaint needs to be placed before the Registrar of the High Court. The Registrar is currently out of the province so the case will be dealt with when the Registrar comes to town.”
