Fiji National University Vice-Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba has called for greater recognition and support for seafarers who play a key role in the region’s connectivity and cultural heritage.

Speaking at World Maritime Day celebrations on Friday, she stressed the importance of prioritising maritime safety and education in Pacific countries’ budgets.

“The Pacific is a vast ocean continent and seafarers are vital to our connectivity. We must prioritize their safety and education in all budgets in the region,” said Ms. Napopo Baba.

She urged industry leaders and governments to provide seafarers with better resources, equipment and training.

“You will need not only the presentation but also the equipment, skills, resources and all the necessary support to carry out your duties safely and effectively.

“You seafarers are battling the oceans in new and harsh conditions that we have never seen before. We must provide you with the necessary tools and training to meet these challenges.”

She also called for improved working conditions and welfare for seafarers and recognition of their contribution to the global economy and the preservation of Pacific heritage.

“Today, we must collectively commit to honouring seafarers, giving them the recognition they deserve and providing the next generation with the resources they need.”
