Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced on Saturday that they had fully captured the headquarters of the army’s 17th Infantry Division in the town of Sinja in Sudan’s southeastern Sennar state.
The Rapid Support Forces shared videos of its soldiers and senior officers speaking at the military headquarters and local government buildings, confirming the takeover.
The attack on Sinja came as military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burgan was inspecting the army’s defensive positions in the city of Sennar, which the Rapid Support Forces attacked on 25 June but the army successfully repelled.
Local sources told Radio Tamazuj that the Rapid Support Forces attacked Sinja, leading to clashes with the Sudanese army at military bases. The clashes displaced civilians to Abu Hajar, Dinder, Ed Damazin and other areas.
Sennar State is a trade center and has important strategic significance. The capture of Sennar State will provide great advantages for the rapid security forces to attack the neighboring White Nile State in the future and cut off the traffic in the Blue Nile region.
RSF spokesman Al-Fateh Qureshi announced on his official X account: “This evening, our forces succeeded in liberating the headquarters of the 17th Infantry Division in the city of Sinja on the west bank of the Blue Nile, and our forces seized military equipment, which is a crucial step and will have far-reaching consequences given the strategic location and military importance of the division.”
“The victory achieved today confirms the resolve of our army to continue to advance and liberate the entire country from the ‘remnants of terrorists’ that threaten our people. Soon, new areas will be liberated and our army will advance to them with confidence and determination to liberate the entire country and achieve stability for our people,” he added.
The Sudanese army has yet to respond.
The RSF has been advancing into Sennar state for weeks and earlier this week clashed with government forces in the strategic Jebel Moya area.
The war broke out on April 15, 2023, when Sudanese citizens were awakened by the sounds of gunfire and clashes in the capital, Khartoum, between Sudanese armed forces and RSF forces.
UN agencies say about 10 million people have fled their homes across Sudan since fighting broke out between the two rival forces.
