When I started my digital nomad journey, my priorities were different. Here’s what I’ve learned after 4 years of remote work:
Priority:
Dream Destination: I used to choose countries based on how amazing it would be to travel to that country.
Security and infrastructure: important, but not my main focus.
Activities: The more the better!
Co-working and community: nice to have, but not critical.
Current priorities:
Coworking first: I work 90% of the time, so I need a productive environment. A comfortable chair, a good desk, air conditioning and the right equipment are essential. Currently, I’m in Madeira and I love Outsite. (Not a paid ad, just a true believer)
Community and Accommodation:
I’ve tried Selina Hostels in places like Costa Rica and Panama. They were fun but there were too many party people.
Airbnb: Quiet but lonely, socializing requires more effort.
Outsite: My favorite so far. Small group size, private bathroom, clean environment, great kitchen, and community manager to organize activities. Perfect for me.
Everything else: weather, activities, whether it’s a city or a small town – those factors now come in third place.
It took me some time to figure out where I was most productive. Now I know my priorities.
What about you? How do you choose your next destination?
