Banjul City Council welcomes historic visit of Bissau Mayor

The welcome ceremony took place yesterday, June 27, at the Banjul City Council Chambers, with the visit of Mayor José Medina Lobato marking an important milestone in strengthening cooperation between the two cities.

To mark the visit, the Banjul City Council organized a series of important events aimed at promoting a strong partnership between Banjul and Bissau.

The event included bilateral discussions focused on mutual interests and the formal signing of cooperation agreements, underscoring the shared commitment to collaborative growth.

In addition to the formal meetings held, the trip provided visiting delegates with opportunities to interact with Council members and the local community in both formal and informal settings.

Mayor Rohit Malik Lowe said: “This will not only enhance diplomatic relations but also create a platform for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.”

“This visit is a key step in promoting international relations and cooperative efforts that will drive mutual growth and development. We anticipate that this strengthened partnership will bring countless opportunities to our communities in various fields including trade, sports and culture.”

Mayor José Medina Lobato expressed his gratitude in a statement, saying: “I want to personally thank my counterpart and everyone in Banjul. Starting with this visit, we are opening a new phase of cooperation between Bissau and The Gambia. The relations between our two countries are already very strong and this visit aims to further strengthen them in all aspects. We are taking an important step towards strengthening our partnership, starting to implement measures that will consolidate the ties between us and work together for a brighter future.”

Mayor Rohit Malik Lowe said her distinguished guests will have the opportunity to explore the beauty of Crab Island and witness the digital transformation of the BCC’s tax collection system.

“This transformation underscores our strong commitment to environmental sustainability,” she said. “Our city is very proud of the Youth Volunteerism Program, which is leading positive change. Beneficiaries of the program are receiving valuable training abroad, equipping them with skills that benefit our communities.”

Mayor Lowe said they are committed to empowering women by providing necessary resources such as boreholes to various communities.

She said the program improves access to clean water and supports the overall well-being of residents. “We warmly welcome the idea of ​​collaboration and believe that through cooperation we can achieve important milestones together,” she noted.

In his final remarks, Mayor Lowe expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Adama Barrow and President Bissau for their efforts in promoting the development of relations between the two countries.

“Their support and partnership are vital to driving progress and growth for our city,” she affirmed. “By working together we can accomplish great things and we are excited about the future prospects of these partnerships.”

At the end of the official welcoming ceremony, the mayors of both countries agreed and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate in promoting the development of both cities.
