Atlanta (USA)—— “Will they replace Joe Biden?” The US President spent a dark night in Atlanta on Thursday after he apparently lost the first presidential debate against his opponent, former Republican President Donald Trump.
With all eyes on the vitality of 81-year-old Biden, the oldest president in history, the worst omen has come true.
Even though he had been cooped up with his team for nearly a week preparing for the historic day, his voice was hoarse, slow, tired, and he had trouble finishing some sentences.
Trump, who is only three years younger, repeated many of his characteristic pranks and avoided answering the moderator’s most uncomfortable questions, but he was seen as more restrained than expected and more energetic than his opponent.

Panic gripped Biden’s campaign during the debate, and his team quickly made the case that the president had come down with the flu during the week, but the damage was done.
It didn’t take long for Republicans to use the fallen tree for firewood, and several of Trump’s allies were quick to claim victory in the “spin room,” a press briefing room installed in the stadium next to the CNN studio where the in-person speeches are broadcast.
“This man cannot continue to be president of the United States, and I am very worried about the country. I don’t think he can continue to govern even six months after his term ends,” said Vivek Ramaswamy, who ran against Trump in the Republican primary and is now one of his biggest followers.
Republican Senators Marco Rubio and Tim Scott walked around the room reiterating that this was a landslide victory for Trump, and both are eager to run for a second term as vice president.
Matt Gaetz, a congressman from the most radical wing of the Republican Party, quickly expressed the thoughts of many people to the media, saying that in a few days, the Democratic Party will start an internal struggle to replace the president.
Evidence of disbelief within the Democratic Party was that it took Biden’s allies several minutes to appear together before the media in the “spin room,” where they tried to convey an upbeat message that contrasted with their long faces.
They included Sen. Raphael Warnock and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, but all eyes were on California Gov. Gavin Newsom, one of the most prominent faces of the Democratic Party.
He was asked several times by the media if he was ready to replace Biden, but he flatly denied that he would take that step: “He has my support. We are with him,” he said solemnly.
The Democratic campaign’s official vision is that the president offers a “positive and winning vision for America’s future” against Trump, who wants to end democracy and abortion rights, according to a statement.
The debate came unusually early, considering the campaign has not officially begun, but was particularly decisive given that the two candidates are tied in the polls and know that any mistake could tip the balance.
According to CNN’s first poll released at the end of the convention, Trump was a clear winner with 67 percent approval rating from respondents.
The fact is that the Democratic Party still needs to hold its national convention in Chicago next August to formally nominate a candidate. Technically, there is time to make a change, but it would be a situation that has never been seen before. JS
