Criticism of Surinamese weather service: Dutch standards recommended

The Suriname Meteorological Service has been criticised over accusations of unprofessionalism.

Lifestyle expert and observer Patricia Wong told GFC News that the service’s forecasts were often inaccurate.

“They often only offer explanations after the fact as to what caused the heavy rain, gusty winds or other noticeable weather changes.

“What do we learn as a society when we look back and understand why it rained so hard? Unprofessionalism was permeating,” she said.

Huang acknowledged that predicting the weather in tropical areas such as Suriname can be more difficult than in temperate areas such as the Netherlands.

In the tropics, weather systems change quickly and there are more unpredictable variables, such as tropical storms and heavy rains.

However, observers believe that this should not be an excuse for frequent incorrect predictions.

She said Suriname’s meteorological department could learn from the experience of the Dutch meteorological department.

“In the Netherlands, weather forecasts are generally more reliable. The Dutch Meteorological Service uses advanced technology and methods to make accurate and timely forecasts. This helps people to better prepare for extreme weather events,” she explains.

“It is necessary for the Surinamese service sector to take the necessary steps to improve its forecasting models and techniques.

This will not only restore public confidence but also improve safety and preparedness for extreme weather events,” Wong concluded.
