The traditional military parade on June 26th took place yesterday in Mahamasina without incident. This year there were no guests of honor from abroad. As expected, opposition leaders boycotted the ceremony, as did former presidents Marc Ravalomanana and Hery Rajanarimapinina, who were conspicuous by their absence.
Members of the diplomatic and consular corps responded to the regime’s invitation. On the other hand, US Ambassador Claire Piarangelo and Isabelle Delattre, head of the delegation to the EU with the title of ambassador, were not present. Last April, the Malagasy government asked for the recall of Isabelle Delattre. The diplomat, assigned to Madagascar in 2022, was accused of making a series of critical statements against the government, in particular about elections, road maintenance funds and the decision to surgically castrate rapists. To this day, Isabelle Delattre still holds her position. The appointment of a new head of the EU delegation usually takes place around July.
Other notable absences included Florent Rakoutoarizo, president of the High Constitutional Court (HCC), and Jean-Jacques Labernirina, interim president of the National Assembly. Former Senate President Herimanana Razafimahefa, who was sacked by his colleagues but remains a senator, was present in the official gallery yesterday.
In addition to Prime Minister Ensay Christian, his wife and members of his government, the governor of Analamanga province, Heri Rasomaromaca, the mayor of the commune of Antananarivo, Richard Ramanabitana and his wife, and other heads of institutions were present. The resigned members of Ensay’s government also took part in the parade from the official stand.
