Prince Charlie’s pistol presented to Prince Charles Chief Petty Officer Douglas Nanestad of Brown’s Bay, Auckland, holds a pistol aboard HMS Bellona at Portsmouth Dockyard today (Saturday). The New Zealand Navy cruiser HMS Bellona, the first New Zealand warship to visit Britain since the war, came to take part in the NATO “Mainbrace” exercise and sailed into Spithead and docked at Portsmouth Dockyard this morning (Saturday). The ship’s captain, GVM Dolphin, brought an old flintlock pistol to be presented to Prince Charles. It was a gift from Lady Culbraith of Auckland, New Zealand, and is said to have been given to Prince Charles by Flora MacDonald when she helped him escape from Scotland to France. September 6, 1952.
