Potash later shared video On June 22, she filmed her goodbye video with her daughters, in which she told everyone about their trip to the airport. Although the mother explained in the video that her daughters had been attending summer camp in Maine for years, it did not stop other parents from criticizing Potash for extending her stay.
“OMG…I will never be able to do this I will miss them so much,” one TikTok user commented. “So little summer time with the kids. That’s family time.”
Another wrote: “I definitely can’t make it to seven weeks.” Potash responded: “I know it’s hard. I’m fine now. I’ll be super anxious for about four weeks, then I can see them on visiting days.”
A third parent chimed in: “Wow, I can’t imagine what it would be like without them for that long. We get so few summers with them.”
While some parents praised Potash for allowing her daughter to attend summer camp and unplug her phone and other electronic devices, she still took the opportunity to call out those who shamed the mother in another TikTok. video.
“How can you send your kid to summer camp to sleep away for seven weeks?” she captioned the video, while filming herself applying lip gloss and gesturing with her hands in her car.
“The kids wanted to go and there were so many positives,” Potash wrote in the post.
One user defended the TikToker, writing in the comments: “So sweet of you to let them make their own decisions. I bet they had a blast!!”
Another parent said, “I hope everyone understands that different people do things differently. My child never wanted to go to summer camp, and that’s OK. I bet your child is confident and is developing important skills.”
Another commented: “Summer camp gave me the best memories of my childhood.”
In accepting todayPotash revealed that her daughters have been attending the same girls’ summer camp since they were eight years old.
On June 26, she told the media: “Their father passed away four years ago. He went to summer camp as a child, and I never went. He said summer camp was the best summer of his life.”
The mother explained that her daughters had specifically chosen to attend their late father’s “sister camp” and that “it was his wish” for them to have a similar experience. She also noted that the camp is seven weeks long and does not offer short-term accommodation, though she and her husband Adam will visit their daughters during the fourth week.
“It’s a digital detox — anyone with a teenager will understand that,” Potash said. “They come back more independent and stronger. They learn teamwork, how to get along with others and how to share a room. They face issues that some kids don’t face until they go to college.”
“If they don’t want to go to camp, I would never force them to go,” she added. “They go because they want to go.”
