The 2024 Global Liveability Index released by the Economic Research and Intelligence Department of the Economist Group of the United Kingdom ranked the capital Algiers as one of the least livable cities this year for the fourth consecutive year. It ranked 171st in the list of 173 cities around the world.

The capital of the country of half a million martyrs received 42.2 points in the index, which relies on a set of sub-indices to formulate its classification, such as Algeria’s stability index, in which Algeria received 25 points, Algeria’s healthcare index, and education and infrastructure, in which it received 58.3 and 30.4 points respectively.

So far, Algiers is tied with Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, Tripoli, the city of Libya, and Damascus, the capital of Syria, for 173rd place. The last one.

The capital of the eastern neighbor had previously achieved the same ranking in the 2023 index, while it ranked 169th in the world in the 2022 assessment and 136th in the 2021 index, remaining unchanged in all annual indicators in the above list.

Globally, the Austrian capital Vienna maintained its leading position with an overall score of 98.4 points, with full marks for independence, medical care, education and infrastructure indicators. It was followed by the Danish capital Copenhagen and the Swiss city of Zurich, which ranked second and third in this year’s list of the world’s top ten livable cities. Other cities include Sydney, Australia, Osaka, Japan and Vancouver, Canada.

Compared with last year, a number of international cities have improved their rankings, such as the capital of Kuwait, which moved up 4 places, Hong Kong, which moved up 11 places, as well as the capitals of Bulgaria, Serbia, China and the United States. Cities such as Atlanta and Pittsburgh.
