What changes will happen to Tunisia’s diplomatic network?

The opening of a new consulate in Bologna, Italy, in early August was followed by the opening of a consular and commercial office in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the promotion of the Tunisian Consulate in Montreal to the level of Consulate General, and a series of new appointments to fill vacant posts as part of the changes in the heads of diplomatic and consular missions abroad. Not to forget the resumption of the annual meetings of ambassadors in a face-to-face format. “This process is ongoing,” revealed Nabil Ammar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Tunisians Abroad. He explained that for the redeployment of the diplomatic network, it is a question of embracing the new changes that are taking place in the world, ensuring better coverage of Tunisian communities abroad and supporting economic expansion.

New consuls general are to be appointed in Paris, Munich and Dubai, and diplomatic action affects a dozen embassies and consulates each year.

“We are also working on rationalizing our real estate assets abroad, even if it means reselling some unsuitable properties to acquire others, which better demonstrates the relationship with Tunisians in their offices abroad and the coordination with all parties in Tunisia,” the minister said. “There is only one diplomacy with multiple components, formulated by the head of state. The leader is the ambassador,” he stressed. “We will have to reassess our relations with the Ministry of Social Affairs and the OTE, especially in terms of the necessary synergies and the staffing allocated to the OTE. We have good coordination with the new Minister of Social Affairs and will be able to deal with these issues. All these issues added up.

Minister Amal is pleased to announce that, after a hiatus of more than three years, the annual meeting of Tunisian ambassadors, consuls and consuls general abroad will once again take place in person. The date is set for July 31, 2024, and this year, in addition to having a different format, it will be marked by a meeting between our postal chiefs and their foreign counterparts based in Tunisia. The Minister expects that this will be an opportunity to review various documents and put them into practice through these contacts.
