Nationwide, nearly 90 percent of wildfires are caused by humans. On Guam, 100 percent of wildfires are caused by humans. For green space protectors like Assistant Forester I Sean Scroggs, that statistic is frightening. “I’m really scared about what’s going to happen on our island, and I really want to do my best to keep my island safe,” Scroggs said. It also means that all of our wildfires are preventable. It was that idea that brought more than 20 participants from seven different agencies to Mayor Sinajana’s office this week, including Fire Chief John Sablan of the Guam Fire Department. “I think educating the public about fire prevention is my biggest takeaway from this,” Sablan said. “We need to educate the public to help prevent wildfires.”
