The violence that has lasted for more than a month and a half in New Caledonia has left many employees unemployed. The numbers for the private sector are starting to become clearer. Before the rebel crisis, an average of 2,400 people lost their jobs each month. Since then, the numbers have exploded.

According to the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Vocational Training, various unemployment programs could affect nearly 20,000 people in the region, or 27 percent of the private sector.

An official summary measures the severity of the insurgency crisis: Nearly 800 companies have 000 employees who requested specific parts of their unemployment were related to the abuse in 2024. “For a specific partial unemployment, the company must be able to prove that the abuse had a significant impact on its turnover, operating results, and that they must have ceased their activities or were unable to operate normally.”” explains Philippe Martin, Director of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Professional Training.

A note sent to the New Caledonian parliament specifies which types of companies are requesting this particular “precise” partial unemployment. As of June 15, SLN has requested more than 2,000 employees from the Doniabo factory and various mines. But mostly, 77% of the requests come from small businesses. The manufacturing and trade sectors are greatly affected, the document details.

There is also a general unemployment system specifically designed to target “abusive practices.” “For general unemployment under common law, the benefit is 75% of the nine-month SMG. For general unemployment specific to racketeering, it is 70% of the salary for the first three months, capped at $288. 000 francs, or two and a half times the SMG. The next three months are 100% of the SMG, while in the last three months we find the same conditions as in the common law unemployment rate. Philippe Martin explains. As for specified partial unemployment, it is 70%, up to two and a half times the SMG, for a period of three months, renewable once.”

Criteria for specific overall unemployment eligibility have been established: the government has established a list of businesses that have been destroyed by at least 50%.

Finally, please note that 4,300 companies have appealed to the National Solidarity Fund.
